Made It!

I never thought I’d feel so accomplished after simply arriving somewhere, but when we landed in Conakry I wanted to jump out of my seat on the plane and cheer. As we got off the plane, the dozen or so of us on the flight and headed to Mercy Ships found each other. It was nice to go through customs together… just to do something “together” was a wonderful feeling after traveling alone. Mercy Ships crew were eagerly ready and waiting to meet us at baggage claim. They knew what to do and where to go. I was so happy to see them!

After the vans were loaded, we made our way through the city to the ship. Our driver zipped through the streets with ease in and out of traffic. It was hectic and I was grateful to not be the one navigating. A motorcycle held a family with their toddler sound asleep sitting between parents. People ran across the highway. I’ve never seen so many soccer games… and such a crowd around each field waiting for a shot at the ball.

Finally we turned off the main road, passed a security point, and bumped down a little lane. And there it was… Africa Mercy. After we unloaded the vans, I tightly gripped the gangway and wobbled up the stairs with my bags like a determined turtle.

When I stepped into the reception lobby, I stood in quiet relieved disbelief. Should I pinch myself? Surely this must be a dream. Even after almost a full day here, it still seems surreal… honestly, jet lag might have something to do with that too. But this place really is special.

My friends, we made it here… By the grace of God and your support, encouragement, love, and prayers. They’re working.

And I get to go to work tomorrow. 😊
